River, the Upcoming Working Retriever!

River doing what a Retriever was meant to do!!!

River is in the process of learning to be a real retrieving dog. Riv doesn't seem to be enjoying Agility very much so my hoomie thought, why not train him to be a bird dog instead since he has quite high prey drive. When the bird (it's a dead chicken) was introduced to him, Riv happily carried it around & even retrieved it a few times on command. Basically they're just gonna do this for fun because Malaysia does not have any clubs or competitions for working Retrievers. So all this learning & training will basically be DIY. I know Riv will very soon be a great working dog!

Just stopped by to bark at you and introduce ourselves. We're the Desert Pups from Tucson and it's nice to meet you. We saw that picture of the bird and we just went crazy!!!!! We love chasing birds, rabbits and gohers.

We meant to say gophers, not gohers. We blame Mom for all of our spelling mistakes.

Way to go, River! It's always great seeing a dog do what he was originally bred for. Once we settle into our new home in Maryland my mom wants to look into getting me into tracking or some basic gun dog training just for fun. For now I love swimming out far into the Chesapeake to retrieve my ball, but I'd love to know what it feels like to retrieve a dead bird. All I know is that they're great for carrying and rolling around on.

Hey Amber!!!!

Your baby is growing up and following in your footsteps. That is amazing what River is naturally doing with the chicken. It it were us, terriers, there wouldn't have been any chicken left!

Love nibbles,

I just noticed that in the word Retriever, there is River name, how cute.
I'd be very happy if my mom uses a real bird to lure me into training, I'll do anything for food!
And by the way, would you please swing by my blog to look at my family portrait, finally my mom came out from her shyness to say hello to all of you.
Cheers!

Go River! Are you going cook that chicken up?

Yuck - carrying around a dead chicken? I'm glad I'm a herding dog and don't have to retrieve that! LOL! Maybe you and River can start a club for working dogs in Malaysia!
