Amber's Bad Hair Day

Oh, mind the size of her belly, she's just put on a few more pounds...

I've noticed something going on with Amber's fur recently but never really took percaution about it. Thinking it was just one of those things that happens w
hen she & Faith plays wrestling. You know they play rough, rip each others ears off & all that! Just recently, the fur on Amber's neck looked like it has been shaved off. We thought someone or sumthing from MRDO Day came towards her & cut off her hair but that would be rediculous & impossible as she was always there in our sight plus, why would they do that? It looks professionaly shaved...hahaha, I know that sounds funny. Then later, patches of fur on her thighs & underbelly began to drop off too.

Usually every morning, my mum would prepare the food for the dogs & I would clean & mop the house. The ammount of hair on the floor is not the usual ammount I pick everyday. All of it is Amber's hair. My God, she looks like a deseased dog! And it's getting worse & worse each day.

We just brought her to a vet & they did
a skin test on her. We're thinking that is could be a fungal thing but it was negative. The doctor couldn't find the real reason. He said it is not fungal but it's hormonal problem. Amber's now on medication but he said it may take months for the thing to go off & her hair to grow back. My, my, my...we waited for her hair to grow for so long & now has dropped off! Sigh...

Don't freak out about that big hole on her thigh, it was shaved for the check up

Hi Melissa

Have only just read about poor old Amber's skin condition. Cleo had a bad problem with her fur at one point, and then we switched to Hartz Oatmeal Shampoo with Vitamin Beads, plus Malaseb medicated shampoo.

her fur is really nice now... we usually shampoo her twice. As in we only wash her once a week, but we shampoo with the oatmeal shampoo, rinse and then shampoo again with the oatmeal shampoo plus malaseb. seemed to work for us. maybe you can give it a shot.

forgot, make sure you dry her properly with a hair drier. Retrievers must be dried very thoroughly...and if she plays with water, you have to dry her as well.

Hi Natasha!

Yes I'm using malaseb right now...Oh, Hartz Oatmeal Shampoo? Is it a human shampoo coz it sounds like it plus, where can I get it? The Malaseb shampoo costs a bomb and we're also suplementing her with hormonal pills which also costs a bomb! I just told my mum about the Hartz shampoo & said she'll try & find it but where? I bathe once a week too...Nowadays, i dry her with the professional hairdrier-very strong but cool air. So, how long did it take for your Cleo's prob to go off? My doc said, it'll take months. Sigh...

Hey Melissa

Blogger has been driving me nuts these past few days. Tried posting a note for you several times but it kept failing... anyway hope this one gets through...

I was basically saying that The Hartz Oatmeal Shampoo is a doggie shampoo and you can get it from Pets Wonderland. There are 2 versions : one with Vitamin Beads which is what Cleo uses and the other is just normal. I think I have a link to all Hartz products on my blog

What I do is wash her quickly with the Oatmeal shampoo, rinse and then wash again for at least 10 mins with Oatmeal plus Malaseb. Then rinse very thoroughly and hair dry with warm air. Cool air sometimes doesn't dry retriever's coats properly as they have a double coat.

You can also dilute a very small amount of Malaseb with water and apply onto badly affected areas every day with cotton. It helps speed up the recover. It took us about 2 months for Cloe's hair to grow back nicely.

Blogger has been driving me nuts too, always got error all the time! Okay I'll try looking for it. That's a good idea. Maybe wiping some Malaseb mixed with water on her will help it faster. I'll try it after this. But Malaseb does make the hair dry, doesn't it? Infact, more hair drop off when using Malaseb Shampoo! But anyway, I hope that it'll improve as soon as possible. Hopefully less than 2 months.
